L&B stands for Ludovico Barbati, who came from Torella dei Lombardi in 1917 and in 1938 started selling spumoni and Italian ice from a horse-drawn wagon around Gravesend; in 1939 he put up the first building on 86th Street, now a three-building complex run by the fourth generation. The square is built upside down: a thin layer of mozzarella on the raw dough, a dark, slightly sweet sauce on top and a dusting of pecorino, with the center left soft on purpose. Regulars fight over the corners at the outdoor picnic tables, and the spumoni still comes in green, brown and white layers.

I'm a lover of Sicilian style pizzas so I had to check this place out, even if it was a bit out of my way.

L&B Spumoni Gardens never disappoints. That iconic square slice with the thick, airy crust, plenty of sauce, and cheese underneath is just so good. Crispy edges, soft center, tons of flavor, and somehow even better when you’re eating it
