We ordered rigatoni vodka, fried mozzarella, garlic bread, and three different types of pizza — and wow. We literally scraped every plate clean. Everything was unbelievably delicious. But what made the experience even more special were Nina. She is truly the sweetest person ever. Her warmth, kindness, and genuine hospitality made our day absolutely perfect. If you want real Italian flavors and an amazing atmosphere, this is the place. Hands down the best. Thank you for such a wonderful experience!

Ordered takeout from Sally’s Apizza and finally got to try it after hearing so much about how hard it is to get an order in. The veggie pizza (5/5) with garlic sauce was really good and definitely stood out. The shredded chicken, however, wasn’t that great—the red sauce itself was good, but overall the combination didn’t quite work for us. (3/5) That said, the pizza itself was good, and we’re glad we finally got the chance to try this iconic spot.

What an awesome place! My family and I stopped here on our way to our Christmas vacation driving from Philly to Maine. We knew it would be difficult to get a table to we ordered take out. They had hot chocolate and hot cider set up outside completely complementary. It was really a nice touch of holiday cheer. The pizza was really good. The crust was well done, very charred and had a taste like no other pizza I’ve had before. I tried the plain and the spicy meatball pizza. I will say this was one of the better pizzas I’ve ever had but did not quite live up to the hype as the best pizza in the US. Either way, if you’re a pizza lovers, this is a must stop if you’re ever in the area.

We had a mozz pie and one without mozz. This was the second-best pizza I had in New Haven on our pizza tour, compared to Pepe’s and Modern. I recommend getting it with mozz. The crust was very nice. It was a good pizza, but the 2.5-hour wait time was overkill. They were inspecting each pie before it went out to customers to ensure it met their standards. The server went above and beyond. Next time, I’ll order takeout and save time.

We drove an hour for "pizza that beats pepe's and modern". Found ourselves standing in a 10 deep line in 20 degrees. After waiting for about an hour outside, and not a single line dropout, we were thinking "this pizza has got to be spectacular if these locals are willing to wait like this". After another half hour, we peered in to see four open tables. Man, this pizza must be life changing if the staff cares so little about their guests as to let them stand out in the cold with open seats! We were finally seated after two hours standing outside, and the nice waitress informed us they would be stopping pizza production for the next 40 minutes to replace the coals. We were committed. We were ready for this heaven sent tomato sauce on dough. We ordered the three pizzas she recommended, and after an hour the foretold pizza arrived. I will spare the reader on the details, however the utter mediocrity of the pizza was so stunning we couldn't even be upset. Somehow, this establishment convinced us to wait for three hours, two of which were in standing in the cold, for pretentious dough covered in tomato juice. Not sauce, tomato juice. Genius marketing, I must hand it to the owners for pulling off over 80 years of highway robbery. Pizza typically requires three ingredients; dough, sauce, and cheese. However two of the three we received came without cheese, and the other came without sauce! So baffled by this experience we couldn't help but carry on the scheme, and so we left the restaurant hanging out our bellies and exclaiming "oh it was so good!" to those standing in the line which had grown twice as long! The City of New Haven also heard us suckers were coming in to town, and left us the gift of a parking ticket after our three hours meter expired.

I ordered a vegetarian pizza for pickup and had the pleasure of speaking with Angel on the phone. As a flight attendant on a private jet, I needed the pizza lightly baked since I would be reheating it later onboard. Angel was incredibly understanding and accommodating with my specific request. The ordering process was smooth, and I really appreciated being able to speak to a real person to ensure everything was prepared just right. My guests thoroughly enjoyed their vegetarian pizza, and the entire experience was seamless. I’ll definitely be ordering again!

After 30+ years of mostly avoiding Wooster Square pizzerias due to the lines, this local decided to try Sally’s takeout. What a huge disappointment. The “large” pizza was the smallest “large” I’ve ever seen. The sauce was extremely bland. Spices nonexistent. The pies were also extremely skimpy on both the cheese & meat toppings & way overpriced compared to other good pizzerias. On the positive side, the crust was thin & had a nice taste but was tough. I suspect it was made in advance & reheated. I really don’t understand what floats the outsized reputations of both Sally’s & Pepe’s except nostalgia & because a lot of the clientele are Yalies, many of whom are from far flung places that don’t have any good pizza & think this is a vast improvement over the bready hinterland collision mats they’re used to. These famous places are not even particularly good for New Haven anymore. I think you’ll get a better, cheaper pie at BAR, Modern & Grand Apizza, & you won’t have to wait in an hour on line. As for New Haven pizza generally, it’s good but nothing exceptional to anyone who’s been to NYC. Throw a rock in the Bronx or Brooklyn & you’ll hit a pizza place every bit as good as anything in New Haven & probably cheaper. This was a big letdown after great expectations.

Wow! What a fun time we had. We tried a number of their specialty pizzas and they were delicious. The favorites were calabrian, potato & rosemary, meatball, cheese, clam. The waitress was great and so helpful.

If you are a pizza lover, a pilgrimage to Sally’s Apizza on Wooster Street isn't just a meal—it’s a rite of passage. Founded in 1938, this legendary institution continues to define what "New Haven Style" (Apizza) is all about. The Crust: This is the gold standard of thin-crust pizza. It’s "charred, not burnt," offering a distinct smoky flavor and a crunch that is structurally perfect. It manages to be paper-thin while holding up to a mountain of toppings. The Sauce: Their tomato sauce is vibrant, tangy, and slightly sweet, cutting through the richness of the cheese and the saltiness of the dough perfectly. The History: Walking into Sally’s feels like stepping back in time. The wood-paneled walls and the classic booths haven't changed much over the decades, and that’s exactly how it should be. The "Garden State" & White Potato: While the plain tomato pie is a masterclass in simplicity, their specialty pies—like the Potato Pie with rosemary and onions—are legendary for a reason.
